This Online Privacy Policy is intended to describe how Rape Response Services (“RRS”) handles information gathered at By visiting, or using the Online Helpline, you agree to follow the terms and conditions of this Online Privacy Policy. RRS may change these terms and conditions from time to time without prior notification, so please consult these terms and conditions regularly for any such changes.

Your privacy and security are very important to us. The following information will help you understand what information we collect online, and how we handle that information once we collect it. This policy will tell you if we disclose that information to anyone, and what choices you have regarding how we use that information.

PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION: “Personally Identifiable Information” is information about you that would identify you, such as your name, address, contact information, social security number, date of birth, or racial, ethnic or religious identity.

GENERAL: RRS is committed to keeping your information confidential. We will not knowingly release any confidential or personally identifiable information without your express, knowing, fully informed written consent or as required byMaine law which includes mandated reporting laws. We do collect aggregate statistical data, such as the number of people served or the number of visits to our website, in order to inform our services and report to funders. The most confidential and secure method of communication with us is via our hotline/telephone or face to face communication. PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MESSAGING: Our Online Helpline is an online chat system. Our Online Helpline is intended to be an anonymous service and you will NOT be asked to provide your name, address, e-mail address, or any other Personally Identifiable Information in order to access the Online Helpline. We strongly advise that you do not provide any Personally Identifiable Information in order to protect your privacy online.  If you wish to receive additional services from RRS, a Trained Advocate may ask you for contact information such as your phone number or email address so that we may contact you to provide the requested services. Only provide this information to a Trained Advocate.

The Online Helpline is meant to provide information and support to individuals utilizing our services in the intended ways that include, but are not limited to; sexual assault information, support to victims or concerned others (those who are seeking support for victims), and those looking for information on other services provided by RRS.  This service is intended for users 13 years of age and older.

Trained Advocates operating the Online Helpline will adhere to all RRS policies including confidentiality of any Personally Identifiable Information and mandated reporting laws.

The information and text conveyed by you to our Trained Advocates during your online chat session is intended to be part of a private conversation between you and the Trained Advocate, and will NOT be recorded, stored, saved, or catalogued by RRS or our chat server provider, ManageMyDedi, LLC. Trained Advocates staffing the Online Helpline will be known ONLY as AdvocateJane, AdvocateJamie, AdvocateTina, or AdvocateKait. Do not respond if anyone by another user name sends you a private message, including a name that starts with Advocate if it is not listed above. If someone by another username sends you a private message, please note you have the right to report them by contacting the RRS Trained Advocate in the Online Helpline or emailing When you enter the Online Helpline during the open hours, one of the above listed advocates will private message you and inform you that they are the RRS Trained Advocate.

Misuse of the Online Helpline may result in being banned from the Online Helpline.  Misuse of the Online Helpline includes use of abusive, offensive, obscene or otherwise inappropriate language and behavior as determined by RRS.  Engaging in messaging or chatting with any user in the Online Helpline other than a Trained Advocate will be considered misuse of the Online Helpline.  RRS cannot monitor private conversations that do not include a Trained Advocate and is not responsible for misuse of the Online Helpline.

MANDATED REPORTING:  We serve individuals in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties, Maine and are governed by Maine law. Mandated reporting laws may require us to record and report information regarding the abuse or neglect, or suspected abuse or neglect, of someone less than 18 years of age or an incapacitated or dependent adult. If you convey such circumstances we may have to record such information and provide it to the appropriate authorities.

MISUSE of TECHNOLOGY: RRS tries to make all online communications as secure as possible, however, due to external factors such as a breach in network security, security and privacy cannot be guaranteed.  RRS is not responsible or liable for any breach of confidentiality or privacy which occurs due to technology or the misuse thereof.   In addition, RRS is not responsible for the security of the technology you are using such as your personal phone, computer, other devices or email accounts. Please refer to your Internet Service Provider, Telephone or Cell Phone Provider for their privacy policies. Please note that your message, call or internet history may be accessible by an individual who has access to these devices. You may wish to learn how to delete your call, internet browser or email history, in order to protect your privacy. Please refer to your hardware and software manuals or providers.

COMMENTING/MESSAGE POSTING ON NEWS ARTICLES: Users who choose to post comments on the news portion of the website will need to provide a username and email address. Your email will only be accessible to RRS for moderating purposes. Before any comment is posted to our page, it will be reviewed by RRS. We hold the right to moderate and curate comments that we find to be offensive, abusive, or otherwise inappropriate to the terms and mission of RRS’ policies. Hate speech, targeting others, offensive and otherwise demoralizing language will not be tolerated and comments will be deleted. Your posts may be viewed publicly and therefore are not private.

In general, visitors may browse without being requested to reveal any Personally Identifiable Information. However, there may be pages on, such as donation pages, where we may request Personally Identifiable Information about you, such as your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, or credit card number should you choose to make a donation online. We may, with your permission, use your e-mail address to send you updates or newsletters informing you of recent events and developments relating to RRS and its mission, or receipts for your charitable donations.
